My Journey
(A long introduction that nobody asked for)
I am a Singaporean filmmaker currently based in London. I began my career in narrative storytelling, with my first on-screen credit as a casting assistant on Anthony Chen’s Wet Season (2019). From there, I worked across a range of roles including art department, casting, script supervision, assistant directing, and producing on features, short films, and commercials. I later worked as a script supervisor on the long-form drama series, co-produced by Taiwan and Singapore, Hungry Souls: From Hell, With Love (2024).
Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn to documentary filmmaking. What started as making personal videos about my family grew into a deeper curiosity about people and their lived experiences. Much of my work is now driven by that curiosity and a desire to understand different perspectives on life.
As a night owl myself, I became interested in others who worked through the night. This led to my first commissioned short documentary series with Viddsee, While You Sleep, which explores the lives of people working the graveyard shift. The series follows individuals such as an SPCA animal rescuer, a suicide hotline volunteer, an ambulance driver, A&E medical staff, and an embalmer—ordinary people doing extraordinary work while the rest of the world sleeps.
While You Sleep went on to win Best Documentary at the Asia Web Awards 2018. That was the first acknowledgement of my work, which allowed me to continue directing and producing several short-form documentary work, including The Digital Divide, Love & Grief, as well as animated-documentaries, If This Isn’t Love and I Failed.
After several years freelancing, I spent a short period studying at the Beijing Film Academy’s Directing Department. Although my time there was cut short by Covid, it filled my memories with a sweet taste of youth, making new friends and watching and discussing films all day.
These experiences gradually led me toward directing, and I gravitated towards non-fiction storytelling. I was accepted into the National Film and Television School in the UK, supported by a Singapore government scholarship.
During my time at NFTS, my film Beyond These Walls was nominated for the Grierson Awards 2024. My graduation short documentary Two Travelling Aunties has since screened at over 25 international film festivals, receiving nominations including the IDA Documentary Awards 2025 and the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2026. It also won Best Documentary at Eye Catcher Short Awards and Best Student Short at the KASHISH Pride Film Festival. The film is now being developed into a feature documentary.
Today, I work as an independent filmmaker focused on non-fiction storytelling. I am drawn to intimate, character-driven stories that explore identity, belonging, and the paths people take through life. I have also participated in documentary labs including Docs by the Sea (2021 and 2025), and was awarded the Excellent Pitch Prize at Tokyo Docs 2025.
I am also passionate about documentary education and have started a non-fiction film club for Singaporeans and Singapore-based creatives, where we gather monthly to watch and discuss documentary films.
